The Collective

The crisis has arrived and cannot be avoided.  We swim in it, drenched in it.  But what is it?

What are our crises?  They are global questions of life and death.  Infinite possibilities beset by infinite obstacles.  What can an artistic expression be when caught within a network of catastrophes and commodification?  How do the imminent threats of climate change, war-mongering, and the consolidation of the world’s wealth to the 1% of the population inform the ethical charge of art making and living in community?

We have responded with the formation of the Crisis Art collective whose intention is to foster international collaboration that culminates in a festival of arts and activism, workshops, and collective engagement.  The CrisisArt festival will take place this July in Arezzo, Italy, at the Tuscan campus for the Accademia Dell’Arte.

We would like to invite you to join our collective of artists and activists, creators and performers.  Our dream is to create a festival of cooperative artistic engagement, wherein the free exchange of expression and ideas can establish and embolden an artistic community; one which is committed to confronting the web of crises that afflict our societies.  We want to understand, together, what is the ethical role of the artist in our given capitalist quagmire and act with fresh impetus and daring insight.

As artist/activists, how can we resist the co-opting of our own expressions by the dynamics of global capitalism?  It is our belief that accepting the rational political discourse of reform will lead to the exacerbation of current quagmires.  The coming catastrophes will surely become worse unless we all take radical action in our communities, our ensembles, ourselves.  We aim to create a festival that transforms our goals into concrete methods.

The sense of urgency is a prerequisite to the work as we wrestle the existential threats of climate change and economic collapse.  Within the implosion of the western world order, the confrontation of modernity and the fallout from a patternless world, there is the possibility to capture an activist energy which could reshape our global economic situation toward justice.  With cooperative strength, we can harness it for the next wave of performance and visual artists.

The chaos of crisis provides winds of stimulation for new ideas, for the co-existence of meaning and non-meaning.

We are the Crisis Art collective and our goal is to foster international collaboration that culminates in a festival of arts and activism, workshops, and collective engagement.  The CrisisArt festival will take place this summer in Arezzo, Italy, at the Tuscan campus for the Accademia Dell’ Arte.
